Family Reunification and Citizenship

Family reunification, citizenship application, and family visa consulting.

From family residence to citizenship — a later, separate stage

This service covers the path toward Turkish citizenship for foreign nationals who are already settled in Turkey through family ties, typically as the spouse of a Turkish citizen or as a long-term family resident. It is distinct from FTurkey's family reunification visa service, which covers obtaining the initial family residence permit to join a relative in Turkey — that residence status is usually a precondition for this citizenship route, not the same product. Marriage to a Turkish citizen does not grant citizenship automatically at any point; it opens a specific statutory route that still requires a formal application and a positive decision by the competent authority.

The marriage-based route under Article 16

Turkish Citizenship Law No. 5901, Article 16, allows a foreign spouse of a Turkish citizen to apply for citizenship after three years of a marriage that remains valid and where the couple is living together in a manner compatible with the union of marriage. The applicant must also not represent a threat to national security or public order and must meet the other conditions the law and its implementing regulation set out. The Directorate General of Population and Citizenship Affairs reviews each file, may conduct a household visit or interview, and decides on approval; a divorce, prolonged separation, or a marriage the authority considers non-genuine will end this route's availability, regardless of how much time has passed.

The general residence-based route

Independently of marriage, a foreign national who has lived in Turkey legally and continuously for the period the law requires may apply for citizenship by ordinary naturalisation, provided the other statutory conditions are met — including good character, sufficient means or a regular income source, no threat to public health, and the administrative assessment of adequate integration. Time spent under a family residence permit can count toward this route where the residence was continuous and legal, but the qualifying period, permitted absences and evidentiary requirements are set by law and its implementing regulation, not by FTurkey.

Preparing a citizenship file

Within an agreed written scope, FTurkey can help you compile the civil documents, translations and residence history evidence a citizenship application requires, track which route (marriage-based or general naturalisation) fits your situation, and coordinate the application through the population directorate. Interviews, household visits and any additional evidence request are handled directly by the applicant and the authority; FTurkey does not attend on your behalf and does not influence the substantive decision.

No approval or timeline can be guaranteed

Citizenship applications are discretionary decisions of Turkish state authorities and can take a substantial and variable amount of time, including further review after an initial file is accepted. An application can be refused, or a decision on an already-approved case can later be revoked in cases of fraud or a sham marriage, without any timeline FTurkey or the applicant controls. No approval, processing time, or specific outcome is promised at any stage of this service.

Request a proposal

The scope required depends on which route applies to you, how complete your residence and civil-status documentation already is, and whether translations or apostilles are still needed. Request a quote describing your family situation, your residence history in Turkey and the route you believe applies, and FTurkey can propose a written scope for the document preparation and coordination support available.
